Planning Your Wild Irish Elopement
So, you're thinkin' of ditchin' the big fuss and gettin' hitched in the land of craic and castles? Smart move! Ireland, especially Northern Ireland (that's the wee bit at the top, for our American friends!), is pure magic. Think jaw-dropping landscapes that'll make your Instagram followers weep with envy, a culture richer than a pot o' gold, and history that'll give you goosebumps. And let's not forget the Causeway Coast – it's basically the superstar of Northern Ireland, with Game of Thrones locations, amazing venues, and the best wedding creatives this side of the Atlantic. As a seasoned wedding and elopement photographer based right here, I'm here to help you plan your intimate, fairytale Irish wedding – minus the leprechauns (probably).

When Should We Start Planning Our Elopement in Ireland? Don't Leave it to the Last Minute!
Now, I used to say six months was plenty of time, but Northern Ireland elopements are all the rage these days (and rightly so!). So, my advice? Start plannin' as soon as you can. Seriously, quicker than you can say "Sláinte!"
If you're comin' from across the pond, you might need a visa (no, not a credit card, the official kind!). You'll need to sort that before you apply for your marriage license. Think about startin' the legal bits and bobs around three months before your dream date. You can find all the official legal stuff for getting married in Northern Ireland here. Don't worry, it's not as scary as it sounds!

Best Elopement Locations in Northern Ireland: Where the Magic Happens
Honestly, you'd be hard-pressed to find spots as stunning as the Irish coast anywhere in Europe. Northern Ireland's coastline is like a greatest hits album of incredible locations. Here are a few of my absolute faves:
-
Dunluce Castle: This medieval ruin perched on a cliff near Portrush is pure drama. You can wander around the castle itself, but the views from the nearby field? Forget about it! Especially at sunset. Chef's kiss.
-
Murlough Bay: Murlough Bay is a wee bit of everything! A Game of Thrones star, it's got lush greenery, dramatic rocks, hidden beaches, and views that'll knock your socks off. Plus, it's a bit of a hidden gem, perfect for an intimate wedding.
-
Ballintoy Harbour: Ever heard of Game of Thrones? Well, Ballintoy Harbour is one of its most famous Northern Ireland haunts. The light here is just magical, and with dramatic rock formations, a gorgeous white sandy beach, a quirky harbour, and greenery galore, it's got it all. And the best part? No need to hike up a mountain!
-
Kinbane Castle: For the slightly more adventurous lovebirds, Kinbane Castle is a must-see. There are a few steps involved (don't worry, nothing too strenuous!), but the views? Totally worth it. It's the perfect spot for a super intimate wedding.
-
Dunseverick Castle: Okay, "castle" might be a bit of a stretch – there's not much left! But the view? Absolutely breathtaking. The mound overlooking the area is ideal for sayin' your "I dos."
-
Brown's Bay: a real hidden gem near Larne! This charming spot offers a more secluded and intimate feel, perfect for couples looking to escape the crowds. With its beautiful sandy beach, dramatic cliffs, and stunning views across the Irish Sea, Brown's Bay provides a truly romantic backdrop for your elopement.

Places to Stay for Your Elopement: Rest Your Weary Heads
You're eloping, so you'll need a cozy place to call home for a few days. The North Coast has some amazing options! I work with some fantastic local rental companies that are often cheaper than Airbnb and can give you the inside scoop on the best hotels in Northern Ireland. If you're lookin' on your own, stick to the Causeway Coast, and search for places in Portrush or Ballycastle. These are two charming seaside towns close to all the best spots, with great restaurants and pubs where you can enjoy some live Irish music (and maybe a pint or two!).
